About the Director
Mr. Lance Barton
Lance Barton is a native of Burlington, NC and a graduate of Graham High School. Lance holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education and a Bachelor of Music from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. At Western Carolina, Mr. Barton served as a section leader and drum major for the “Pride of the Mountain’s” Marching Band and has performed for thousands of high school students who have competed in competitions such as Cary Band Day and Bands of America Regional and Grand National events. He has also served as a counselor for Western’s Summer Symposium for the Marching Arts, teaching future drum majors and student leaders. Mr. Barton has also performed with the Western Carolina University Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Artist in Residence Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. Mr. Barton was selected as a Student Soloist (2010) to perform with the Wind Ensemble and a three-time Student Conductor (2011, 2012, and 2013) for the Western Carolina Symphonic Band.
Mr. Barton currently serves as the band director at our host site, Southwest Onslow High School. His ensembles have received excellent and superior ratings at the North Carolina Music Performance Adjudication Festival and various marching band contest in Eastern North Carolina. At Southwest Onslow, Mr. Barton serves as the Student Council Advisor to students ranging from grades 9-12. In 2018 Mr. Barton was selected as Southwest Onslow’s “Teacher of the Year”.
Mr. Barton has been a clarinetist with Onslow Winds during his residency in Jacksonville. His personal affiliations include: National Association for Music Education, North Carolina Music Educators Association, Eastern District Band Masters Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, and Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.
