About the Director
Mr. Michael Lopez
Michael Lopez began his music education in the Fairfax County, Virginia school system. Mr. Lopez holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree and Masters of Music Education from East Carolina University. He retired from teaching after servicing as a public school band director for 32 years. He has held band director positions at Greensville County High School (Emporia, Virginia), Nash Central Jr. High and Northern Nash Senior High (Nash County, NC), Southwest Middle School and Southwest High School (Onslow County, NC). Mr. Lopez also has been working as an Adjunct Professor at Coastal Carolina Community College, teaching low brass and music appreciation.
Bands under Mr. Lopez's direction have consistently earned Superior ratings at North Carolina MPA festivals as well as the National Adjudicators Invitational Dixie Classic Band Festivals held in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. Mr. Lopez's ensembles have also received First Place Awards in Florida band festivals. In 2007 Mr. Lopez was awarded the Magna Cum Laude Award sponsored by the Women Band Directors International and the John Philip Sousa Foundation. The award acknowledges outstanding middle school band programs in the nation. The adjudication committee commented that they were very impressed with Mr. Lopez's level of musicianship and dedication to music education.
Mr. Lopez was selected to conduct the 2002 NC Eastern-All-District Middle School Concert Band. He also has conducted the Onslow and Pender All-County Bands. His students have participated in numerous All-County, All-District and North Carolina State Honors Bands. Southwest Middle School selected Mr. Lopez as their "Teacher of the Year" in 1998 and again in 2005. Mr. Lopez was awarded the 2011 North Carolina Bandmasters Award of Excellence from the Eastern District Bandmasters Association. Mr. Lopez's professional affiliations have included: NAFME, NCMEA, and the Eastern District of the North Carolina Band Masters Association.
Mr. Lopez is the Bass trombonist with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra as well as the Wilmington Symphonic Winds. The Onslow Winds Community Band has selected Mr. Lopez to be their new director for 2017. He resides in Jacksonville with his wife Tina. They have four daughters and three grandchildren.
